The history of the Moremi Game Reserve is quite an interesting part of Botswana. The Moremi Game Reserve is the first wildlife sanctuary initiative by a local African tribe, the Batawana tribe. During the 1950s the concerns of the existence of the wildlife of this area became the drive to proclaim Moremi as a reserve with restrictions and conservation policies. The Widow of Chief Moremi III was leading the tribe and in 1963 is became a reserve.
This reserve was covering the area from Khwai Rivers to Mogogelo River. The Chief's Island was always the hunting ground of the Chief. During the 1970s the tribe's final decision to include chiefs island as part of the reserve. During 1991 the area became even bigger. by adding theNqoga and the Jao River borders to the reserve. Remarkable progress by an African tribe. This all to conserve the wildlife and wilderness of Botswana for the people. This makes the History of Moremi Game Reserve unique in Africa. Today when visiting the Moremi and the local communities, you can feel the pride of the people towards tourism and conservation in general.
The Moremi Game Reserves lies on the eastern border of the Okavango Delta. Partly a swampland with water channels and partly riverine forests. A true African jungle. A jungle that is full of wildlife, wilderness and adventure. Today the Moremi Game Reserve plays an intricate role in Tourism in Botswana. Tourism contributes to a large scale towards the local villages and communities.
